Finland’s water supply system is of an internationally high standard, and clean drinking water is a daily given for most of the population. Meanwhile, water supply is critical infrastructure, and its operating environment is changing rapidly.
An aging water distribution network increases the risk of pipe failures and disruptions, the impacts of which can escalate quickly. Climate change, extreme weather events, and growing environmental risks also increase the unpredictability of water quality. In addition, the critical importance of water to society highlights the need for early detection and rapid response.
In these conditions, a key factor is real-time situational awareness: how quickly quality deviations are detected and how controlled the response can be before human health and/or the functioning of society are affected.
LIQUM 6th Sense service brings continuous real-time monitoring of water quality to water utilities. It is based on electrochemical fingerprinting technology and AI-based analytics. The system detects anomalies in water quality and generates automatic Early Warning alerts, enabling immediate response to potential disturbances.
Digita provides a nationwide LoRaWAN IoT network as well as a 24/7 Network Operations Center (NOC). This enables data transmission, continuous monitoring, and the creation of round-the-clock situational awareness for critical infrastructure.
This water security solution forms an integrated system where:
LIQUM 6th Sense service is already in use in several locations in Finland, including raw water and distribution network monitoring by water utilities, as well as on premises such as shopping centres and industrial sites such as beverage plants. Practical applications have demonstrated the system’s effectiveness in varied and critical water quality monitoring conditions.
“Water is critical infrastructure, and its monitoring must match its importance. By combining LIQUM 6th Sense technology with Digita’s IoT network and continuous monitoring, we can provide water utilities with a new level of situational awareness and response capability.”
— Janne Rannikko, SVP IoT, Digita
The goal of the collaboration between Liqum and Digita is to raise Finland’s water security to a new level and build an operating model that can be widely used in critical environments.
