The quality and security of Hartwall’s beverages begin with high-quality water

Hartwall has been using LIQUM technology to support water security at two of its production facilities for more than 15 years. The system continuously monitors the quality of incoming raw water and detects even the slightest changes in real time. Water is the most important raw material in the beverage industry, and LIQUM’s monitoring technology enables even minor inconsistencies to be detected immediately. At Hartwall, LIQUM provides production operations with a continuous overview of water quality and reinforces quality control processes.

Real-time monitoring provides added value

Real-time monitoring makes it possible to detect deviations immediately. If something changes in the water quality, LIQUM is the first to provide information about it. Some quality deviations occur only gradually and are not easy to detect without continuous monitoring. LIQUM provides production operations with both a real-time overview of water quality and long-term data.

Quality-monitoring plays a key role in production safety at Hartwall. Automation and Energy Manager, Sami Pohjanen, describes the importance of the system:

“This is an important online monitoring system for the brewery’s raw water quality. If something undue were to happen to the water, we would receive an immediate alarm and would be able to react right away. The LIQUM system provides a clear notification of any change in the composition of the water.”

Operations Manager Tuomo Nevalainen meanwhile emphasizes the importance of monitoring groundwater quality:

“It is good that we continuously monitor our most important raw material — water — with LIQUM. LIQUM is integral to our food security.”

Globally, it has been observed that, for example, extreme weather events exert stress on infrastructure, and human activity can also have an impact on groundwater quality. This further highlights the importance of continuous monitoring of raw water. Finished beverages are released for distribution once analyses at every stage of the process have confirmed the safety of both the final products and the water.
